A one-repetition-maximum formula estimates a hypothetical maximum from weight and repetitions. Different formulas can return different values, especially as repetition count rises, so the method and input set must be visible.
Bar loading is a separate exact arithmetic task. Subtract bar and collar mass, divide the remaining load between two sides, and choose symmetric available plates without silently exceeding the target.
Estimate first, select a load second
One common estimate is Epley: estimated 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30). Treat that result as a model, then choose a training target independently and calculate symmetric plate combinations from actual equipment.
- Record the completed external load and technically valid repetitions.
- Choose and label the estimation formula.
- Treat the estimate as a range or reference, not a required attempt.
- For bar loading, subtract bar/collars and split the remainder equally before selecting plates.
Worked scenario: estimate and a separate 90 kg setup
A lifter completes 80 kg for five repetitions. Separately, a 90 kg barbell target uses a 20 kg bar.
- Epley estimate: 80 × (1 + 5/30) ≈ 93.3 kg.
- For the 90 kg target, plates must supply 90 − 20 = 70 kg total, or 35 kg per side.
- With common plates, each side could use 20 kg + 10 kg + 5 kg, subject to the actual inventory and collar convention.
Outcome: The formula estimates about 93.3 kg, while the plate calculation constructs a distinct 90 kg target. The estimate does not instruct the lifter to attempt a maximum.
