What this calculator answers

Use this tool for shifts, events, workouts, or other intervals shorter than 24 hours. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats the end as occurring on the following day.

Input definitions

Start time
The clock reading at which the interval begins, using hours and minutes.
End time
The clock reading at which the interval ends. An earlier reading means the next day.

Formulas and variables

Same-day duration

duration seconds = end seconds − start seconds
  • clock seconds = 3600h + 60m + s
  • end ≥ start

The result is then decomposed into completed hours and remaining minutes/seconds.

Across-midnight duration

duration seconds = (86,400 − start seconds) + end seconds
  • 86,400 = seconds in 24 hours
  • end < start

This rule assumes one overnight wrap, not a multi-day interval.

Assumptions and rounding

  • The two clock readings are at most one day apart; an equal start and end means zero duration, not 24 hours.
  • No date or time zone is supplied, so daylight-saving gaps and repeated hours are outside scope.
  • One minute is 60 seconds and one hour is 3,600 seconds.
  • The engine computes whole seconds; the current form collects hours and minutes, so displayed examples have zero remaining seconds.

Worked examples

Daytime interval

Start 09:20; end 17:05.

Calculation
  1. From 09:20 to 17:20 is 8 hours.
  2. The end is 15 minutes earlier than 17:20, so subtract 15 minutes.
  3. 7 hours 45 minutes = 7 × 3,600 + 45 × 60 = 27,900 seconds.

Result: The duration is 7 hours 45 minutes, or 27,900 seconds.

Interval crossing midnight

Start 22:50; end 01:15 the next day.

Calculation
  1. 22:50 to midnight is 1 hour 10 minutes.
  2. Midnight to 01:15 is 1 hour 15 minutes.
  3. Add them: 2 hours 25 minutes = 8,700 seconds.

Result: The duration is 2 hours 25 minutes.

Questions people ask

What if the end time is earlier than the start time?
The calculator assumes the interval crosses midnight once and treats the end as being on the next day.
Does 09:00 to 09:00 mean zero or 24 hours?
It means zero in this tool. To represent a full day, use a date-aware duration calculator with different dates.
Does this account for daylight-saving time?
No. Clock-only inputs do not identify a date or time zone, so DST cannot be determined reliably.
Can I calculate more than 24 hours?
Not with this two-time version. Use the date-difference tool together with times when an interval spans multiple days.

Boundaries and common mistakes

  • Do not use a clock-only calculation for payroll across a daylight-saving transition.
  • An earlier end time is interpreted as one overnight wrap, not as invalid input or a negative duration.
  • Equal clock readings deliberately return zero.

Variables, defaults, and limits

Start time
Start time is a clock time input. The displayed starter value is 09:00; it is an example, not a hidden assumption.
Default: 09:00
Accepted values: The field has no narrower HTML limit, but it must still satisfy the documented formula domain and produce a finite result.
End time
End time is a clock time input. The displayed starter value is 17:30; it is an example, not a hidden assumption.
Default: 17:30
Accepted values: The field has no narrower HTML limit, but it must still satisfy the documented formula domain and produce a finite result.

Worked examples

Time duration calculator evaluated example 1

Use the page’s labelled starter inputs to verify Time duration calculator.

Inputs
  • Start time: 09:00
  • End time: 17:30

Evaluated result: 8 hr 30 min

Time duration calculator evaluated example 2

Change one valid input or choice and evaluate Time duration calculator again to check that the result responds deterministically.

Inputs
  • Start time: 09:45
  • End time: 17:30

Evaluated result: 7 hr 45 min

Validation and boundaries

  • Every visible required input must be present; a missing value is never replaced with zero.
  • NaN, positive or negative infinity, unsafe overflow, and a non-finite final result are rejected.
  • Field-specific minimums, maximums, and choices apply to Start time, End time.
  • Dates are evaluated as civil calendar values; endpoint, cross-midnight, leap-day, and time-zone choices remain explicit.

Frequently asked questions

What question does Time duration calculator answer?
Use the Time duration calculator for fast, clear results with formulas and practical examples. The implemented relationship is R=(minutes(x₂)−minutes(x₁)) mod 1440; x₁=Start time; x₂=End time.
Which inputs does Time duration calculator use?
It uses the visible fields Start time, End time. No hidden value is substituted for an omitted required input.
What happens when Time duration calculator receives an invalid or extreme value?
The page rejects missing, ambiguous, out-of-range, or non-finite values and refuses to display a non-finite result.
Why can Time duration calculator differ from another result?
Different unit conventions, endpoint policies, fee or rate assumptions, formula domains, and premature rounding can produce a different answer.
Can I use Time duration calculator as professional advice?
It provides a calendar calculation, not a legal deadline or jurisdiction-specific holiday determination.
How can I verify the Time duration calculator result?
Recalculate the two evaluated examples without rounding intermediate values and compare the declared formula or convention with Standard sexagesimal time arithmetic.
