What this calculator answers

This calculator compares a date of birth with a chosen target date. It is intended for calendar age and date planning, not legal eligibility rules that may define when an age is attained differently by jurisdiction.

Input definitions

Date of birth
A valid Gregorian civil date in YYYY-MM-DD form.
Target date
The date on which age is measured. It must not be earlier than the birth date.

Formulas and variables

Completed calendar age

target date − birth date = completed years + months + days
  • Birth date = starting civil date
  • Target date = comparison civil date

The algorithm first counts complete years, then complete months, then remaining days; it does not treat a year as 365.25 days.

Elapsed days

total days = target ordinal day − birth ordinal day
  • Ordinal day = consecutive Gregorian day number

Leap days are included when they fall inside the interval.

Assumptions and rounding

  • Dates use the proleptic Gregorian calendar and contain no time of day or time zone.
  • Calendar components are completed units, so remaining days are not a fixed fraction of a month.
  • A February 29 birth date remains a real input date; next-birthday treatment in a non-leap year follows the engine’s documented civil-calendar rule and may differ from local law.
  • All displayed year, month, day, and total-day values are whole numbers; no decimal-age approximation is used.

Worked examples

Age on a later month and day

Date of birth: 2000-01-15. Target date: 2025-03-20.

Calculation
  1. 2000-01-15 to 2025-01-15 completes 25 years.
  2. 2025-01-15 to 2025-03-15 completes 2 months.
  3. 2025-03-15 to 2025-03-20 adds 5 days.

Result: The calendar age is 25 years, 2 months, and 5 days.

Interval crossing leap day

Date of birth: 2012-02-29. Target date: 2024-03-01.

Calculation
  1. 2012-02-29 to 2024-02-29 completes 12 calendar years.
  2. 2024 is a leap year, so February 29 exists.
  3. 2024-02-29 to 2024-03-01 adds 1 day.

Result: The calendar age is 12 years and 1 day.

Questions people ask

Why not divide total days by 365.25?
That produces an approximate decimal age. Calendar age depends on actual month lengths and leap years, so completed years, months, and days are counted directly.
Does the calculator include the birth date as day one?
No. Elapsed time is zero on the birth date. Total days count the day boundaries crossed from the birth date to the target date.
How are February 29 birthdays handled?
The date remains February 29 in leap years. Non-leap-year birthday conventions can depend on purpose and jurisdiction, so verify legal deadlines separately.
Can this result establish legal age?
No. It supplies calendar arithmetic only. Voting, contracts, benefits, school admission, and other rules may specify their own effective date.

Boundaries and common mistakes

  • Do not enter local date-and-time strings; only the civil date is used.
  • Month lengths vary, so 30 days is not always one completed month.
  • A calendar age result should not be presented as a legal determination without checking the relevant rule.

Variables, defaults, and limits

Date of birth
Date of birth is a civil date input. The displayed starter value is 1990-01-01; it is an example, not a hidden assumption.
Default: 1990-01-01
Accepted values: The field has no narrower HTML limit, but it must still satisfy the documented formula domain and produce a finite result.
Target date
Target date is a civil date input. The displayed starter value is 2026-08-02; it is an example, not a hidden assumption.
Default: 2026-08-02
Accepted values: The field has no narrower HTML limit, but it must still satisfy the documented formula domain and produce a finite result.

Worked examples

Age calculator evaluated example 1

Use the page’s labelled starter inputs to verify Age calculator.

Inputs
  • Date of birth: 1990-01-01
  • Target date: 2026-08-02

Evaluated result: 36 yrs 7 mths 1 day

Age calculator evaluated example 2

Enter birth date = 2000-02-29 and target date = 2025-03-01 to exercise Gregorian leap-day handling.

Inputs
  • Date of birth: 2000-02-29
  • Target date: 2025-03-01

Evaluated result: 25 yrs 0 mths 1 day

Validation and boundaries

  • Every visible required input must be present; a missing value is never replaced with zero.
  • NaN, positive or negative infinity, unsafe overflow, and a non-finite final result are rejected.
  • Field-specific minimums, maximums, and choices apply to Date of birth, Target date.
  • Dates are evaluated as civil calendar values; endpoint, cross-midnight, leap-day, and time-zone choices remain explicit.
  • The birth date cannot be later than the target date.

Frequently asked questions

Why can total days divided by 365 disagree with completed calendar age?
Calendar age advances through actual month lengths and leap years; dividing elapsed days by a fixed 365-day year is only an approximation.
What question does Age calculator answer?
Use the Age calculator for fast, clear results with formulas and practical examples. The implemented relationship is R=Δ_cal(x₁,x₂)=(Y,M,D); x₁=Date of birth; x₂=Target date.
Which inputs does Age calculator use?
It uses the visible fields Date of birth, Target date. No hidden value is substituted for an omitted required input.
What happens when Age calculator receives an invalid or extreme value?
The page rejects missing, ambiguous, out-of-range, or non-finite values and refuses to display a non-finite result.
Why can Age calculator differ from another result?
Different unit conventions, endpoint policies, fee or rate assumptions, formula domains, and premature rounding can produce a different answer.
Can I use Age calculator as professional advice?
It provides a calendar calculation, not a legal deadline or jurisdiction-specific holiday determination.
How can I verify the Age calculator result?
Recalculate the two evaluated examples without rounding intermediate values and compare the declared formula or convention with Proleptic Gregorian calendar arithmetic.
